Location
Polo Island is approximately 30 hectares in Mompong Strait, within the group of islands off the coast of the North Eastern province of Marinduque, in the town of Sta. Cruz. It is surrounded by natural white sands and extends out into moderately deep blue water. The seawater is clean, unpolluted and rich in marine resources
Elevation Relative to Sea level
Polo islet is generally flat and rolling land with maximum elevation of 10 feet more or less, but surrounded by shallow coral reefs stretching from its shoreline to an average of 200 meters.
Weather, Humidity, and Wind direction
The weather condition within the locality is generally sunny all year round except in the rainy months from August until the middle of December. The rest of the year has clear blue sky and starry during the night. There is an even distribution rainfall throughout the year with no pronounced wet and dry season.
The prevailing wind directions are mainly northeast and southwest monsoon
Water sources and power supply
At present the islet does not have sources of potable drinking water. It usually comes from the mainland and other surrounding barangays. But modern technology can always detect the site of tributaries of potable water source even near the seashore.
Power supply within the islet is not yet available except for the personal handy generator set. But the municipal government has already launched electrification projects and in due time, electricity will be available through connections from the main barangay.
Drainage and Sewerage
The seawater around the island is lucid and clear because there is no pollution by drainage and sewerage also because of the absence of factories near the islet. For future development, drainage and sewerage systems should be well planned to protect the beaches and the surrounding seas from pollution
Ordinances and Incidental requirements relative to Local government, etc.
The local authority, the Barangay Council of Polo Island, and the Municipal Council of Sta. Cruz have made simple legislations and ordinances. Permits for construction of resort facilities can be secured with reasonable fees. Permit to operate business establishments and other leisure facilities can be easily secured. Also other incidental requirements require coordination with environmental rights. Ordinances concerning taxation are also operational.
Sources and cost of construction materials and labor
Labor procurement is not a problem with the locality due to the availability at minimal cost. Availability due to the existing educational facilities that the province provides which continuously produce white collar and technical graduates such as: teachers, engineers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians mechanics, farmers, etc.
Types of soil and Geological structure
Soil types found in the Polo Islet are sandy, sandy-loam, clay and rocky. Coconut trees thrive best in the island. Please visit our gallery for pictures.
